I own a pair of these and really like them, so I gave these as gifts for the skaters in my family. Since the males all have hockey skates, these proved a poor choice. Even after adjusting repeatedly they still fall off all the time.

This little monster came with photo instructions. I get the fact that the springs and the screws go in the middle...however the part that says "cut to fit" threw me off. I guess because I have adult figure skates. I did not need to cut any off. If you do then it might be best to buy the guards that are one piece and not with a spring. It took me about 10 minutes, a butter knife, and some strength to put them together. Now they are the most useful things I have. You NEED guards to walk around off the mat or ice. They save your blades! Great investment!

When you own a pair of ice skates, it's important to have two sets of blade guards: hard and soft. Each has a distinct purpose and both are indispensable.

Many people don't realize that stepping onto hard concrete, wood, or metal with your skates will almost instantly damage the blades, rendering them dull, or causing nicks in the edges. It's difficult to skate on dull edges, so it's important to protect your blades with hard guards while walking around the rink. Be sure and remove them before stepping onto the ice, otherwise you will fall spectacularly! Place them on the outer ledge near the ice door while you're skating (and if they are a popular color, you might want to write your name on them, to prevent them from accidentally being taken by another skater). Retrieve them when you step off the ice, but be sure and wipe the snow from your blades before you put the guards on. Also, use a toothbrush to clean them out from time to time, otherwise the collected dust and debris will dull your blades.

When you're done skating for the day, wipe your blades with a small towel and then put on a pair of soft guards (also known as Soakers or Soakies), such as Size Large Terry Cloth Blade Covers / Soakers. These will absorb melting ice and condensation and prevent your blades from rusting. NEVER store your ice skates with the hard guards in place--they trap moisture and your blades will rust in a very short amount of time. (I learned this the hard way!)

Hard guards can usually be purchased from your local pro shop, but they may be limited in available color selection. Amazon carries a great many colors to choose from, including ones that shimmer or glitter. The guards do need to be assembled using a screwdriver, because they feature a metal spring in the middle which is what allows them to stretch to fit your blades exactly. Its placement will vary depending on the size of your skates. If you have smaller skates, you may need to cut the guards down to fit, but your pro shop might be willing to do this for you.

Be aware that these Universal Hard Guards are for figure skates only. If you own hockey skates, try Pro Guard 7070 Hockey Skate Guard.

A lot of work, but they work Feb 14, 2009 By Becky
These guards were time consuming to prepare (you have to cut them to size) and they have fallen apart (the spring pops off now and again) and the springs are already starting to rust after just a couple of weeks of use. They work and the price is right, but I would recommend the caterpillar style over this one.

I use them on my size 7 figure skates, and they fit perfectly. Easy to assemble, and comes in fun colors.

When putting it on for the first few times, it might be a little difficult to put the blade in the slit, but after a few times it adjusted so its better.

It works well, and its cute. But since I've never tried other brand, so I don't know how good they are, thus a 4 star.
